Remodeling contractors add a lot of value to most projects. Be sure you are comfortable with the process before you start.

It’s common for anyone to wonder if they can get the same results for less cost. The problem comes when you are assessing a process new to you and you deal with infrequently or possibly not at all. The context you have for making a remodeling contractor decision is incomplete.

Remodeling and many home improvement projects often fall into this group. When reviewing various quotes, consider the following elements making up every remodeling quote. They all can impact a remodeling quote (and the true value you receive).

Pride – All company owners take great pride in their business. If all things work out as the business owner would like them to, their employees maintain that same sense of pride and execute their responsibilities. If it doesn’t happen, lack of pride or experience can affect the final outcome. A privately owned and operated company can offer a crew that will deliver a consistently higher quality of service. Will those less experienced or less prideful employees work on your project?

Workers Compensation Insurance – The remodeling contractors you choose should be insured to protect you against any injuries incurred on site. If workers are not insured, the home owner is liable for doctor bills, rehabilitation, etc. Or, if you have a “handy” relative or neighbor, keep in mind you are responsible for any injuries that occur in your home (assuming they have the knowledge and skill to complete your project to begin with).

When buying a service, there is always a temptation to try and trim costs. Every homeowner should be aware as the quotes decrease, at some point there is a decrease in quality.

Additionally, even if a quote is higher, it does not necessarily mean you are buying the highest quality craftsmen, materials or process.

The best way to assess the value of a quote is to review it on an item by item basis and compare, materials, fixtures, personnel and processes. This systematic approach will help you define the best value for your dollars spent and eliminate any artificially inflated quotes.
