This table illustrates the kitchen amenities homeowners prefer in new homes and kitchen remodel projects.

Kitchen remodel projects and kitchen design in new homes show very specific preferences by homeowners according to a recent survey entitled “The New Home 2015”. The survey was a broad survey to identify general building trends and likely consumer choices. Some of the most relevant findings include:

  • A double sink, recessed lighting, and table space for eating are very likely in a kitchen remodel
  • The average, new single-family home will be smaller and have more green features
  • The living room will either vanish or merge with other spaces in the home
  • The “Great Room” is the likeliest room to be included in the average new home
  • Low-e windows and engineered wood products are the likeliest green features

The kitchen of the average new home of 2015, or a kitchen remodel, is likely to have a double sink, recessed lighting, table space for eating, a breakfast bar and pull-out drawers according to survey respondents.

You can expect a typical kitchen design will also in a central island, a walk-in pantry, a recycling center, desk or computer area and granite counter tops in a Madison WI Kitchen Remodel. There was also a strong preference shown in installing laminate counter tops.

Kitchen Remodeling History

Trends and homeowner tastes do change. A kitchen remodel in 2015 and in the future will also have less of some amenities. For example, trash compactors are trending downward, landing on the trash heap of kitchen remodeling history. Joining trash compactors are fireplaces, wine coolers, butler’s pantries, hot water dispensers, and a small appliance storage area.

The table below shows preference for amenities homeowners are likely to include in new homes and, we expect, to be chosen as part of the kitchen design and kitchen remodeling process. The table shows a part of a larger new home survey published by the National Association of Home Builders.

The scoring is as follows – a 1 denotes “not at all likely” and 5 indicates an amenity is very likely.
